한국은 말레이시아와 대승을 거둔 뒤 사우디아라비아를 만나 16강에 진출했다. 오늘 오전 1시(KST) 경기는 한국이 1:1, 승부차기 점수 2:4로 승리했다.

이번 경기는 2022년 카타르 월드컵에서 한국이 포르투갈을 꺾고 16강에 진출했던 경기장인 에듀케이션 스타디움에서 열렸다. 사우디아라비아에게도 뜻깊은 경기장이었다. 아르헨티나, 그들은 바로 이 경기장에서 폴란드를 만났다. 경기는 사우디에게 2:0으로 패하며 끝났으며, 이는 월드컵에서의 활약에 있어 중요한 경기였다.

지난 말레이시아전에서 공격수 조규승이 교체선수로 강등됐다.

전반전은 손흥민이 경기장 중앙에서 롱 패스를 받아 원터치로 받아 골키퍼가 막는 것 외에는 득점 없이 순조롭게 흘러갔다. 또 다른 예외는 사우디의 코너킥 때인데, 공이 골대를 두 번 맞고 나중에 한국 수비에 의해 걷어졌다. 행운의 상호작용으로 경기는 후반전으로 향했다.

후반 1분도 채 지나지 않아 압둘라 라디프가 득점을 올리며 승부를 주도했다. 후반 20분 한국의 끊임없는 공격에 조규승은 추가시간 10분에 후반 2분 코너킥에서 헤딩슛을 성공시켰다.

연장전에서 계속되는 기회에도 불구하고 한국은 득점에 실패하며 승부차기로 경기를 진행했다. 그러나 3, 4번째 킥에서 조현우의 놀라운 세이브에 힘입어 한국은 기적적으로 승부차기 스코어 2:4로 사우디아라비아를 이겼다.

이번 승리로 한국은 카타르 아시안컵 8강에 진출하게 됐다. 대표팀은 한국시간 2월 3일, 새벽 12:30분, 호주와 8강전을 할 예정이다.

South Korea, Beat Saudi Arabia and Proceeds to the Quarter finals.

After the devastating draw against Malaysia, South Korea was able to proceed to the rounds of 16, meeting Saudi Arabia. The match was held today at 1 am (KST), with South Korea’s victory with a score of 1:1 and a penalty score of 2:4. 

The match was held in Education Stadium, the same stadium where the South Korean team beat Portugal in the 2022 Qatar World Cup and proceeded to the rounds of 16. It was a significant stadium for Saudi Arabia as well, as after the first surprising victory against Argentina, they proceeded to meet Poland in this very stadium. The game ended up with a 2:0 loss for Saudi, a significant match for their performance in the World Cup.

Cho Gyu-seung, the striker who performed poorly in the last round against Malaysia, was demoted as a substitute player.

The first half was quite uneventful with no goals, with the exception of Son Heung-min’s one touch receive from a long pass from the center of the stadium, which ended up being stopped by the keeper. Another exception was when Saudi’s corner kick, where the ball hit the goal post two times and was cleared later by the Korean defense. With its lucky interaction, the game headed to its second half. 

Not even 1 minute in, Abdullah Radif scored, giving their lead to the match in the second half. With constant attacks from Korea in the last 20 minutes, Cho Gyu-seung was able to score a header from a corner kick in the last 2 minutes in the 10 minute additional time.

Even with continuous chances in overtime, Korea wasn’t able to score, therefore proceeding the game on to the penalties. However, with Jo Hyun-woo’s amazing save in the 3rd and 4th kick, Korea was miraculously able to beat Saudi Arabia with a penalty score of 2:4.

With this triumphant victory, South Korea will be moved onto the quarter finals in the Qatar Asian Cup. They will be competing on February 3 at 12:30 am (KST), with Australia in the quarter finals.
