I went on a trip last week and had a lot of homework behind me, so I'll introduce my second trip today. Today is the story of a very special experiential trip. At Boeun Traditional Craft Experience School in Chungcheongbuk-do, I learned how to draw a pyrography directly from Young-jo Kim, the only artisan in Korea.

The pyrography(烙畵) is a technique to draw landscapes, flowers and birds, etc. by ironing a base material such as paper, wood, or leather with an iron. This is a painting method with an iron heated over a hot fire. Long ago, you must have seen a lot of paintings made with iron paintings on wooden blocks at the entrances of tourist destinations. I used to draw nice letters and pictures on the rice spatula.

The pyrography is called ‘Tanghwa(烫画)’ in China and ‘Sohwa(燒畵)’ in Japan. Young-jo Kim is the national intangible cultural assets No. 136 pyrography master artisan. Respect comes to me when I think of how much heat and the danger of burns before a work was created and how he devoted himself to his work with his artistic soul.

This trip will be part of a cultural trip with a local celebrity of the Korea Tourism Organization in 2021.
